“Exhale” was a response and an offering to healthcare workers during the pandemic. Using the metaphor of holding your breath while driving through a tunnel, I describe the feeling of exhaling after years of holding your breath in fear and protection. This poem honors the work healthcare workers provide, acknowledges our grief, and celebrates the unique experiences of working in a hospital. I am proud to have been a healthcare and hospital worker and to have cared for my community in one of our most difficult times. This was performed at Denver Health.
