For the past four years, I have been working with the Children of Gaia and Poetry719 as the poetry curator and host of the George Floyd Remembrance Event. This event takes place on the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd in Manitou Springs. We have a libation ceremony to call in our ancestors, bring together Black vendors, have performances from Black artists and poets, and celebrate Black lives. We conclude the event with a candlelight vigil for George Floyd and all those killed by police violence. This is a perfect example of using art as a tool for activism and advocacy.
